Does a Dehumidifier Clean the Air of Smoke?

While a whole-house dehumidifier can help to reduce humidity levels and create a more comfortable indoor environment, it is not specifically designed to clean the air of smoke particles or odors.

Use a whole-house dehumidifier to absorb smoke

Smoke particles and odors can be challenging to remove completely from the air, especially if they are deeply embedded in furnishings, carpets, and other surfaces. However, some whole-house HVAC systems may have additional filtration options, such as high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters or activated carbon filters, which can help to capture smoke particles and reduce odors to some extent.

Preair provides the high-end WH series of whole house dehumidifiers. The WH dehumidifiers adopt MERV8 filters and can be directly connected to the HVAC system. Generally, the dehumidifier with MERV8 can solve many problems. MERV8 filters can capture particles as small as 3.0 to 10.0 microns in size, including larger particles like pollen, dust mites, and mold spores. However, they may be less effective at capturing smaller particles like smoke, bacteria, and viruses. The WH135 large house dehumidifier is indispensable in modern family life if you want to have a good indoor air environment. Though the filter of the WH135 dehumidifier is the MERV8 filter, you can choose HEPA filters to replace it if you want to pursue a higher filter level.

Use a professional air purifier to clean smoke

If smoke odor removal is a concern, you may want to consider using additional air purifiers or filtration systems specifically designed to remove smoke particles and odors from the air. These systems typically use HEPA filters, activated carbon filters, or other technologies such as ionization or UV-C light to effectively capture and neutralize smoke particles and odors.

Regular maintenance of the equipment

It's important to address the source of the smoke if possible, such as smoking indoors, cooking smoke, or smoke from wildfires, to minimize its impact on indoor air quality. Regular ventilation, cleaning, and maintenance of your HVAC system can also help to improve indoor air quality and reduce the presence of smoke particles and odors in your home.
